This lecture will present some reflections on the cuneiform texts from Mari dating to the end of the Šakkanakku period, in the nineteenth century BCE. It will focus on this still partly unpublished corpus, especially its scribal traditions and some of its linguistic features. These texts reflect a local writing tradition that disappeared after a major “reform of writing” under Yaḫdun-Lîm, the first Amorite king of Mari. This reform introduced scribal practices from Central Mesopotamia.
The lecture will also discuss what these texts can tell us about the end of the Šakkanakku period and the transition to the first Amorite dynasty at Mari.
Finally, the lecture will introduce the Department of Assyriology and Archaeology of Ancient Western Asia at the University of Liège, its teaching activities, and its main research projects.
